Part sea yarn, part guide book, part history, part culinary journal, this book relates a couple's experiences and impressions during a five-year, 16-country circumnavigation of the Mediterranean Sea in their sailboat. Here you will read of the compromises and surprising benefits of living in a small space afloat, of the tight-knit but welcoming community that is cruising sailors, of unexpected and wonderful encounters with locals, of Mediterranean food in all its magnificent variations, and of adventures ashore like camel riding in Tunisia, ballooning in Cappadocia, and camping with Bedouins in Jordan. Running throughout are the challenges of maintaining a yacht and sailing it into unfamiliar waters, told in non-technical language through anecdotes sometimes harrowing but more often merely amusing. It's all here.

Over the Bar eBook Steve Anderson Reviews
Plenty of people dream of chucking their jobs and sailing blissfully into the sunset, but few ever do it and fewer still publish a book about it. Steve Anderson and his wife Pam Steele are happy exceptions. Tennessee lawyers with two grown sons, they quit the business, bought a 46-foot Hylas yacht, christened her "Eirene" (a daughter of Poseidon), and set sail for Europe. Steve's book, "Over the Bar," chronicles their adventures 2006-10, and what amazing adventures they are!
In five voyages traversing the Mediterranean, Gibraltar to Beirut, Port Said to Mallorca, with a daunting diversion into the Black Sea, Steve and Pam brave the requisite rough seas, mechanical snafus and a few near disasters while never losing sight of their goal which is, simply, to sail on and pursue their dream. They realize it many times via magical isles, remote fishing hamlets and hidden coves, guiding "Eirene" into places few people have heard of, much less visited. The glamour ports are there too--Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Malta, Istanbul, etc., fascinating in their own right, but it's the obscure spots that cast the greater spell.
Steve and Pam also spent plenty of time ashore, riding camels deep in Tunisia, trekking Turkey to the Iran border, exploring the Corsican interior and ruined Palmyra in the Syrian desert, to name a few. These jaunts are all brought to life by Steve's smooth, chatty prose as he and Pam react to the culture, cuisine and sometimes politics of a region. Alternately serious and hilarious, snarky and astute, part travelogue, part personal diary, it's mostly just plain fun.
Hardly along for the ride, Pam, a.k.a. "The Admiral," proves to be as intrepid a sailor as her husband. She's also a first-rate cook, and foodies will drool over her inspired use of local ingredients, along with Steve's descriptions of their on-shore meals. Indeed, who wouldn't want good food and wine to enhance twilight along the rugged Croatian coast or that sunset view of yet another mystical Greek island?
Whether sailing alone, in a regatta or with friends old and new, Steve and Pam have not one but five adventures of a lifetime. "Over the Bar" is a richly tantalizing ship's log that will--almost-- make you feel like you're aboard "Eirene." It may also make you rethink that dream of getting away from it all.
So far I'm loving this book. We are about to do a portion of what they did, and I can't wait now! Well written.
I was child neighbors with Steve Anderson. I thoroughly enjoyed the book even though I have no desire to sail. The desire to see some of his locations visited though was instilled in me.
This is a wonderful book! A fun journey for any reader who loves the sea. Thank you for putting your experience into words and sharing your adventures with us all.
I had the privilege of sailing with Steve from Bermuda to the Azores. Steve is a great sailor and a great friend and an outstanding writer! Great book!
Wonderful essays about living one's dreams with a sense of adventure and humor, not to mention the enjoyment of great food and wine, ancient sites, and the delightful people met along the way.
